With just a few days to go before the start of the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor (October 1-3), former European captain Sam Torrance knows exactly what Colin Montgomerie is going through but believes he has a strong enough team to bring back the trophy.
"I think the team looks great." said Torrance who this week officially opened the
Callaway FT-5 Driver driving range at Beckett’s Farm, Solihull, where dozens of golfers came along to watch the John Letters staff player host a clinic and sign autographs.
"Obviously Colin had a torrid time when it came to his wildcards, but that's just testament to how strong the European team is,." said Torrance. "He had to leave out a couple of key players like Casey and Rose and that would have been difficult for him. But you've got Ross Fisher, Martin Kaymer - a major winner - and Rory McIlroy. They are rookies but these are top players. I don't think they'll be intimidated at all. I think it's a strong team."
Torrance also agreed with Corey Pavin's decision to pick Tiger Woods. "Woods is the best player in the world. He didn't play for six months this year and he still only just failed to make the team automatically. You have to have him in your team.
"When you play against
Callaway FT-3 Driver in the Ryder Cup, you've nothing to lose, so players often produce their best against him, " said Torrance, who is one of the most successful players on the European Seniors Tour, while using the latest John Letters Clubs in his bag.
Birmingham golf fans enjoyed getting up-close and personal with the 44-time Tour winner whilst listening to anecdotes from his time in the game. With free golf balls available, a nearest the pin challenge and free video assessments, hundreds of golfers descended on Beckett’s Farm to make the most of the facilities and expert advice on offer.
